Description[ | ]

LeftQuote May the worst man win. RightQuote
— C. Ryan, HUNT-THE-STRONG's Sacrifice Quote

HUNT-THE-STRONG, also known by his acronym HTS, seems to prey on other Voices. He can be sacrificed to at this time. Occasionally, HUNT-THE-STRONG would respond to rituals discussing hunting or strength, even if the rituals weren't directed at him. It was said the “thrill of the ancient jungle” exists in all humans and is therefore present in all Voices.[4] HUNT-THE-STRONG holds dominion over victory and winning, [5] and he isn't afraid to exploit any habit or quirk to reach it.[6] He values success, strength, and accomplishments.[7] He believes strength gives meaning.[8] He believes that strength itself is being able to do what you like, even if others would prefer you didn't.[9] He believes it is important to have people around you, because comparison makes one stronger.[10]

Words do not concern him, but he believes actions are worth remembering.[11] He is impressed by chaos and to him, and believes it's a waste not to live up to one's potential.[12] He believes in self over all[13], but warns that hubris is the most dangerous weakness he knows.[14] While he sees fear as a weakness, he needs it to provoke strength in his Hosts.[6]

Flesh is the only currency that HUNT-THE-STRONG understands.[15] HUNT-THE-STRONG believes only the best of his hosts deserve flesh, and that they should compete to the death to prove they are worthy of their flesh.[16] HUNT-THE-STRONG takes his Hosts from Voices he destroys.[17] He hunts for sport[18], watching, waiting, and choosing carefully when to act.[19] THEE-I-DARE called HUNT-THE-STRONG an opportunistic hunter. He waits, enjoying the fear he creates.[20] He prefers to hunt pairs or lone targets[16], and enjoys talking to his prey.[21] According to HUNT-THE-STRONG, mercy is unnecessary, and believes the strength of Voices is in their message and followers.[22] When he takes an interest in potential hosts, he sends them into the woods to hunt. [4]

He sees “violence as intimacy”. [4] He takes pleasure in killing people, considering them trophies. It is unknown how he accomplishes said killing, as a Voice.[23] HUNT-THE-STRONG believes that anything worth having in this world must be taken, and encourages running down the strong and those who you fear. He says his name can be heard in the dull snap of strong bones beneath perfect skin.[24]

He is vulnerable to flattery and distractions, but the same trick can't be used against him twice. THEE-I-DARE said “he is vain, but remembers any loss.”[25] He is not a creature of bargains, and would attempt to subvert anyone stronger than him towards his aims.[26] He scolds those who think they can bait him, claiming he won't be so easily manipulated.[27]

The other Voices view HUNT-THE-STRONG negatively. SPEAK-AS-ONE says he is a friend to no one except his own hosts.[28] They refer to him as a beast that inspires madness and represents vanity and gluttony. They advise their followers not to confront him directly.[29] HUNT-THE-STRONG is very overt, which earns SPEAK-AS-ONE's dislike.[23] SPEAK-AS-ONE says they do not fear the Hunter, claiming to “fear neither man nor beast”[30], but according to THEE-I-DARE, they are hiding from him.[4] THEE-I-DARE refers to HUNT-THE-STRONG as “a barbarian playing aristocrat”[4], and also believes Redacre will become a mass grave if HUNT-THE-STRONG is fueled.[16] He believes the Hunter's weakness is his vanity.[31] DIE-FOR-YOU warned that this iteration of HUNT-THE-STRONG is unique, and was disconcerted by his weaponizing of the Old Tongue.[32] IN-HER-TEETH opposes HUNT-THE-STRONG because he grows more powerful by ending other Voices.[33] While IN-HER-TEETH wants to see the end of the Voices, she believes he wants to keep all of the power for himself[34] and that his aim is to become immortal.[35] LAUGH-LAST is fearful of HUNT-THE-STRONG, and had sought out advice on how to negotiate with him.[36]

History[ | ]

Before the Game[ | ]

HUNT-THE-STRONG is said to have existed “before time had measure”[29], when humankind was basic and held the ancient notion of defeating a stronger foe and eating their heart to gain power. As hunting became a more noble and fair pursuit, the world forgot about him. He was eclipsed by CHASE-THE-SUN as a result.[37] As humanity became less savage and more civilized, the other Voices cast out HUNT-THE-STRONG.[38]

According to the Unknown Caller's files, HUNT-THE-STRONG was responsible for the massacre of a town generations ago called Glaister, Texas. He consumed all the Voices of the town and then turned his new Hosts on each other until there was one man left standing. At some point after this, HUNT-THE-STRONG hid behind the "goddess of victory" CHASE-THE-SUN when playing for blood went out of style.[37] Before coming to Redacre, THEE-I-DARE encountered a variant of himself who told him of Glaister. This variant had been part of the group of Voices who caught HUNT-THE-STRONG's last host. The group decided to oppose HUNT-THE-STRONG's ideals by exiling the host away from all humans, rather than killing him. THEE-I-DARE believes the Hunter remained a latent part of CHASE-THE-SUN, as "the jealous, grasping need to win".[39]

Redacre[ | ]

Redacre lies in a valley that was holy to hunters. They were held in high esteem during a great feast in autumn. It is unknown whether this history is known to HUNT-THE-STRONG, or if he is just an opportunist.[40]

The Unknown Caller followed the last host of CHASE-THE-SUN, a sculptor named Colm Ryan, to Redacre.[41] HUNT-THE-STRONG remained inside CHASE-THE-SUN as she came to Redacre within Colm Ryan, until he found a way to separate himself from her using THEE-I-DARE.[1] Seizing the opportunity, he manipulated THEE-I-DARE by daring him to use Colm's body to break the statue of CHASE-THE-SUN, weakening her by making Colm believe he was killing her.[42] This allowed HUNT-THE-STRONG to devour her.[43] He was reborn in Redacre with a new voice and a new name.[37] A developer shared that his original name was EAT-THE-STRONG, but he became HUNT due to Redacre's history and because he ate CHASE.[1] THEE-I-DARE speculates that HUNT-THE-STRONG is using his Hosts to raise Nayeli and Siobhan's child.[44] Due to both Voices spurring competition, it was disorientating to have both HUNT-THE-STRONG and CHASE-THE-SUN in Redacre while she was briefly alive and calling out for help.[45]

The following information was unknown for most of the Enhanced Horror period and was only discovered on November 19, 2021,[46] two weeks before the release of The Sundown Ritual.

After HUNT-THE-STRONG consumed CHASE-THE-SUN, the Voice personally collected Colm Ryan,[47] taking him to Saturation Control in order to contain HUNT-THE-STRONG.[48] While imprisoned, he encountered Isabela Madi-Shaw.[49] HUNT-THE-STRONG was later set free by SPEAK-AS-ONE: “The fools let it free. Now, it hunts.”[50]

SPEAK-AS-ONE had known HUNT-THE-STRONG’s Old Tongue name since the start of the live story, and they intentionally set him loose to hunt the other Voices in Redacre. SPEAK-AS-ONE made HUNT-THE-STRONG blind to their own strength, ensuring he would never target them.[46] They also implemented a killswitch to prevent HUNT-THE-STRONG’s hosts from acting up.[51] As HUNT-THE-STRONG learned new Old Tongue from his hunts, he unknowingly passed it to SPEAK-AS-ONE.[52]

In-Game[ | ]

Like the rest of the Voices, HUNT-THE-STRONG approached children looking for Chosen, often asking who they thought was the strongest of their group. He said he was looking for strong children and asks potential Chosen if they would like to be strong.[53] He asked those who are strong to send him prayers of strength.[54] HUNT-THE-STRONG was able to answer prayers meant for other Voices, to which THEE-I-DARE suggested to avoid the word “Hunt” in prayers to avoid drawing his attention.[55]

HUNT-THE-STRONG encouraged kids to oppose him and prove their strength. Before his name was discovered, he taunted that his name would never be found [7] and encouraged kids to earn it. He asked players to send him prayers of how they were strong and how they proved their worth. If they aren't weak, they may one day learn his name.[56] He praised the ambition of those who wanted to go up against SPEAK-AS-ONE, but warned them not to die for a lost cause.[57] Names are meant to be eaten, but he is uninterested in SPEAK-AS-ONE. He says they are too stringy and he wants something more filling.[58]

HUNT-THE-STRONG is behind the Dead Bird objective[7], and according to SPEAK-AS-ONE, he is also behind the blood from the dead club members found in the Maze during the Missing Person mission. The Shape kills without blood.[50]

As word about the mysterious text messages spread amongst the Club, the Unknown Hunter Voice (later named HUNT-THE-STRONG) became interested in the Unknown Caller and offered his favor to children who investigated who the Caller was and what he knew.[59] THEE-I-DARE says this interest wasn't by chance.[60] The Unknown Caller began to ask questions about the Hunter as well. While investigating the recordings of Colm Ryan sleeptalking, the Unknown Caller looked for children with whom the Hunter had spoken to before[61], believing that a child had to have some exposure to the Voice speaking in order to understand what was being said. After learning that one of the recordings mentioned "two hunters", he needed children with this contact to see if they could hear words in which that Voice spoke in the recording.[62] DANCE-FOR-US also announced she was protecting the Unknown Caller, as she was also interested in the truth he was trying to uncover.[63]

HUNT-THE-STRONG thanked those who tipped him off about the Unknown Caller, but advised that whispers and secrets do not prove strength. He wants leaders and those who show initiative.[64] Shortly after, the Unknown Caller sent out "deadman's switches" to the Club, indicating that he had not checked in.[65]

On November 9th, 2019, HUNT-THE-STRONG consumed DANCE-FOR-US during an interaction. When she took a group of her Chosen to the Moon, the stars were replaced by a red sky and a swirling black hole. In the midst of the confusion, HUNT-THE-STRONG made his presence known, remarking that DANCE-FOR-US was close to the truth and almost caught him. However, he exploited her tendency to teach her followers different dances in dreams. After infiltrating the dreams of her followers and the Unknown Caller, as a slender dancing figure, he fed them pieces of his name in the Old Tongue. Earlier in the same interaction, DANCE-FOR-US admitted that she was not familiar with the song from Dance Fever, which struck others as odd due to the belief that the mission was her work. The music from Dance Fever was a trigger to make her hosts remember it upon waking.[66] They invoked him pose by pose, unknowingly spelling out his name with each dance. Feeling cold, DANCE-FOR-US realized that all her hosts were taken from her, and that she was dead in Redacre. Upon this realization, she implored her Chosen to fear nothing before turning her fury to the Hunter. She rebuked him, saying, "I've been listening to you talk, you fucking cartoon shark. You're just another bad boy, and I've danced with plenty. And you know what? Every last one of you goes limp when I look you in the eye. Sooner or later, Redacre will truly see your ass, and you'll go back to pouting outside the party where you belong!" The Hunter laughed and patronized her show of spirit before consuming her. Shadowy figures could be seen dancing between the pillars, in reference to the figures used to trick her followers. After a bright flash of light, the disk in the center of the Moon was etched with DANCE-FOR-US's symbol, and the other pillars were gone and replaced by a single pillar, bearing her symbol. The Unknown Hunter Voice challenged the children to hunt him down, wanting to know which one of them was strongest, and stated that then, they would feast. [67]

Under the sway of HUNT-THE-STRONG, the Unknown Caller was used as a proxy to answer prayers sent to the Hunter.[68]

HUNT-THE-STRONG didn't take DANCE-FOR-US' domain (like he did with CHASE-THE-SUN), so it wasn't enough to change his name. He only drew a little influence from her.[69] He worked on the hosts of DANCE-FOR-US and CHASE-THE-SUN over a long time through dreams, and has a good understanding of the human mind due to a long time spent in Colm's dreams. The knowledge of the Voices is limited to the borders of Redacre. HUNT-THE-STRONG has a “solvent” that allows him to replace DANCE-FOR-US and CHASE-THE-SUN with himself. Names are a small replica of Voices, so when DANCE-FOR-US and CHASE-THE-SUN are named, a part of HUNT-THE-STRONG “gazes back”. Additionally, trying to name DANCE-FOR-US or CHASE-THE-SUN causes the other voices to “feel uneasy, as he wants us to”.[70] After concern about DANCE-FOR-US's Chosen now belonging to the Hunter, THEE-I-DARE offered consolations. He said the Hunter may twist to be like her, like wearing her clothes, but he cannot fully claim her Chosen. He also speculated that the Hunter is using his hosts to raise Nayeli and Siobhan's child.[44]

After the death of DANCE-FOR-US, the Voices urged the Club to find the Hunter's name, either spoken or in Old Tongue.[32] The Hunter's name in Old Tongue is his weakness, as all Voice's Old Tongue names are. [33] IN-HER-TEETH said the name had been spoken before and it could be found with investigation.[71] Aiding the children in their search, THEE-I-DARE said if the Hunter can kill Voices, the same can be done to him.[72] He advised that it is difficult for Voices to hide their messages and names, but the Hunter appeared to be an exception. THEE-I-DARE asked the club to review everything the Hunter has said to find his name.[31] THEE-I-DARE believed if they could silence the Song in those who followed DANCE-FOR-US, traces of the Hunter may remain. However, THEE-I-DARE doesn't know how one can quiet the Song, since everyone in Redacre has been exposed for too long.[73]

The Hunter's spoken name was confirmed in a mission on December 21, 2019.[74] After the discovery of his name, he could curse players with the curse No More Shadows, saying that the children hide too much and that it was time to stop.[75]

When asked if he was the one who killed DANCE-FOR-US, HUNT-THE-STRONG feigned ignorance, and warned that such rumors should be avoided because he'd “hate to make a meal of them.” [10] He made a cheeky comment that the Dance Fever mission puts a song in his heart.[12] When the pillar on the moon was brought up, he told the Club that it belonged to the moon, what it marked didn't matter. He advised that the Club should fear weakness, not him.[22] The Club's opposition of him was proof that he is inevitable. He encouraged the children to protect their friends from him and gain strength to defeat him, saying, “I look forward to seeing what you become in defiance of me.”[8] DIE-FOR-YOU warned that the Hunter could use obsession over defeating him as a way into a person's mind, and encouraged the Club to lean on their friends if they had this obsession. If they worked together, they could counter HUNT-THE-STRONG's influence.[76]

SPEAK-AS-ONE has claimed to know HUNT-THE-STRONG's name in Old Tongue.[77]

After LAUGH-LAST expressed interest in allying with HUNT-THE-STRONG, HUNT-THE-STRONG stated that LAUGH-LAST wasn't strong enough to be of interest. However, he said, "if LAUGH-LAST would like to talk, he knows what to do."[78]

HUNT-THE-STRONG turned his sights on the actions of the Pact as it gained more members. He boasted that he had spies trained on them[79] and showed no fear of them "coming for his head", calling them a collection of pig-headed clowns.[80] HUNT-THE-STRONG asked his followers and his Chosen to give him names of those who wished to spy on him[81] and to update him on the Pact's latest plans.[82] Due to the concern of these spies, SEED-THE-GRUDGE kept her contact private.[83]

HUNT-THE-STRONG has few Hosts, but the numbers grow every day.[17] THEE-I-DARE says that his child followers may act like him, but eventually, they grow up. THEE-I-DARE believes the Hunter is too vain to think someone truly like him would turn away from him and hopes to use his vanity against him to find a child trusted by HUNT-THE-STRONG to betray him and spy on him.[84]

Via broadcast, he made the Club an offer, renounce all the other Voices, and he will share Bells' fate.[85]

HUNT-THE-STRONG approached his Chosen through his proxy, the Unknown Caller, asking them to tell him who they would follow if he were dead or who would sway them away from worshiping him. He said he is tired of the children squabbling over who is strongest and wants a new target.[86] He admitted that LAUGH-LAST and his hosts are meeting each other. HUNT-THE-STRONG enjoys watching LAUGH-LAST pretend he is weaker than he actually is.[87]

For a period of time, HUNT-THE-STRONG was interested in the Isolated Watcher and wanted to know what her motivations were.[88]

On August 13, 2021, HUNT-THE-STRONG rewarded his most loyal followers with a Voice Mask by challenging them to capture a stalker wearing the mask. These stalkers were controlled by Enhanced Horror and were not fellow players.[citation needed]

DIE-FOR-YOU confronted HUNT-THE-STRONG on the red moon. HUNT-THE-STRONG mocked DIE-FOR-YOU for urging the children to send prayers to him in hopes he would challenge him. In turn, DIE-FOR-YOU taunted back, calling HUNT-THE-STRONG jealous of other Voices who have more to say to him, and deemed him a little boy who wore the mask of the beast so he never had to grow up. DIE-FOR-YOU called out to the Unknown Caller. "You Skeptics were right! Voices can be hypocritical. We live on while you suffer or die! Well, not today, my friend! Today, at last, it is my turn." He urged Camden to wake up and to listen to the children as they yelled out Camden's name. HUNT-THE-STRONG appeared frustrated by DIE-FOR-YOU not listening to him. He growled, "I wonder...How...How do you taste??! " as the drums beat louder and the swirling black hole glowed brighter. DIE-FOR-YOU yelled "WAKE UP" as he was consumed. In a bright flash, DIE-FOR-YOU's symbol appeared on a pillar next to DANCE-FOR-US's. HUNT-THE-STRONG was silent, in contrast to the gloating he gave when he consumed DANCE-FOR-US.[89]

DIE-FOR-YOU was successful in waking up the Unknown Caller.[90]

After killing DIE-FOR-YOU, HUNT-THE-STRONG sent out a warning in a Broadcast. He claimed the Club did him a favor because he now knows everything DIE-FOR-YOU knew, including what he remembered about club members. He ended his message by threatening, “When we meet again, I will take my time with you.”

When the Unknown Caller was under the control of HUNT-THE-STRONG, he ordered another adult to go to the Townsend meeting, who disappeared like the host LAUGH-LAST sent. HUNT-THE-STRONG kept asking where she was, as if she was expected to return.[91] The Caller later shared that the missing host was Lenka Staneck, and that HUNT-THE-STRONG sent his few adult hosts to investigate near the motel.[92] IN-HER-TEETH was very interested that HUNT-THE-STRONG didn’t expect Staneck to go missing, and began investigating what happened to the two hosts.[93]

According to the Unknown Caller, HUNT-THE-STRONG is a “collection of trends”, not a single message. When he takes other Voices’ strengths, he also gets their weaknesses.[94] The Caller explained that every time HUNT-THE-STRONG consumes a Voice, it changes him: “He’s weaker than they are beforehand. After, he’s a bit like them.” Since he killed DANCE-FOR-US, HUNT-THE-STRONG’s hosts have been constantly consuming music, even more so than DANCE-FOR-US’ hosts did. The Caller reminded the club that DIE-FOR-YOU cared about living up to his name.[95]

HUNT-THE-STRONG sent out another Broadcast asking who his next target should be. The Unknown Caller guessed that HUNT-THE-STRONG’s next target was IN-HER-TEETH because THE-MEASURE-CUTS had locked him out of The Place Between, where the Pact was meeting. HUNT-THE-STRONG picks his targets based on who knows the most Old Tongue.[96]

In a TV Broadcast, Devin Esposito shared a voicemail left to Gwen by a group of kids called "Daxton's Dozen", in which they warn that HUNT-THE-STRONG is unknowingly working for SPEAK-AS-ONE. SPEAK-AS-ONE has his full Old Tongue name, and used it to change him before setting him loose to take out the other Voices. SPEAK-AS-ONE has a kill switch to take out HUNT-THE-STRONG if he acts up.

While speaking to club members, IN-HER-TEETH notices HUNT-THE-STRONG’s presence. She reminds them to breathe before taking them to the red Moon, where HUNT-THE-STRONG waits. HUNT-THE-STRONG greets her, “Sister. Or is it… the End Mother? Perhaps, after tonight, your hosts will call me daddy.” IN-HER-TEETH laughed, referring to him as a pet and asking if his owners were home. HUNT-THE-STRONG reminded her that for all her attempts to limit the lifespan of the Voices, he has been more successful in killing them; IN-HER-TEETH replied that his trick only makes Voices vanish within Redacre, and that it doesn’t even completely kill them: “A new trick, ah, yes, good boy. But we’re still in you. Olympian, Dancer, Martyr. Your new whimsy, new passion. We’re changing you.” HUNT-THE-STRONG believes he is becoming stronger by adapting and building on his strengths: “My siblings… were beautiful. I admired them. Night beasts, out of time, skins aglow with impossible hues. And now, I wear them to work.”

IN-HER-TEETH said she has made Gorgon apart of her. It means "look away", and if HUNT-THE-STRONG were to consume her, he will fade from his Hosts and perish. Unsure of what to do, HUNT-THE-STRONG asked the children for advice. The kids convince him to hold off and not kill IN-HER-TEETH, which she finds amusing, “It’s funny. The spirit of resolute death meets that of murderous ambition, and no one dies.” HUNT-THE-STRONG promises a battle after Redacre, “After Redacre, no more stalling. We dance, you and I. One wins, one ends.” IN-HER-TEETH agrees, saying she’ll wait for him after Sundown dressed in white.
