Colm Ryan, also known as The Sculptor, The Witness, and The Captive is a character from The Blackout Club (game).

Colm was voiced by Trevor Devall.[9]

Description[ | ]

Colm was a sculptor,[10] and his appearance in Redacre was cause of arguments between the other two residents of 922 Hoadly: his sister Siobhan and her wife Nayeli.[6] Colm was the only host of CHASE-THE-SUN in Redacre, [11] and one of the last remaining true believers of her in the world.[7]

Colm was “one of a kind”,[12] so many of the Voices were interested in him because he was able to sing in "two distinct tones".[13] This unique ability allowed him to be a host to two Voices. Such a talent is valuable because it allows two Voices to meet within one mind in complete secrecy, rather than meeting with two separate hosts. [14]

History[ | ]

Before the Game[ | ]

When Colm Ryan came to Redacre, he was CHASE-THE-SUN's only host,[11] with dreams of becoming the best sculptor on earth.[15] He was followed by the Unknown Caller,[16] who theorized Colm was carrying a piece of HUNT-THE-STRONG.[10] The Dead Skeptic have extensive files on Colm.[17] DANCE-FOR-US was also interested in Colm because of his gift, and likely influenced the Unknown Caller’s investigation of him.[18]

Soon after arriving in Redacre, Colm found one of THEE-I-DARE’s Name Fragments. Because the cull had been going on for a while, that piece of THEE-I-DARE was weak and more malleable.[19] Colm stayed with his sister Siobhan, and her wife Nayeli,[6] who are both SPEAK-AS-ONE hosts.[20]

Three of Nayeli’s baby book entries and a copy of a police report can be found in the Journals, on the laptop in The Hideout, which detail the following: Colm Ryan came to Redacre as an IVF donor for his sister, Siobhan, and stayed for most of the pregnancy. CHORUS Communities strongly encourages adoptions, but Siobhan wanted to have a biological connection to the baby. Uncomfortable with the disagreement, Siobhan’s wife, Nayeli, gave in, secretly swapping out the Chorus-provided sample for Colm’s.[6] However, CHORUS discovered the deception and issued a reprimand to the couple. Nayeli grew concerned about Colm and his “art” and believed that Colm intended to take the baby with him away from Redacre.[21] The police report described damages to Colm’s room in Nayeli and Siobhan’s house (922 Hoadly), including broken windows, spray-painted warnings, and a broken religious sculpture that can still be found in the house. Colm claimed to have slept through the incident, but the officers were suspicious of his motives and “listed Mr. Ryan as a subject to be watched.”[22]

Gwen, who lives in 921 Hoadly, witnessed Colm jogging before the vandalism incident; he seemed angry, driving himself to exhaustion. Colm fell face down into a puddle and remained there for several minutes, and then rose and “returned home with a confident stride.” THE-MEASURE-CUTS relocated Gwen afterward for her safety.[23] The use of mirrors or reflective surfaces by Voices to speak to hosts is a “tradition of long before”, from when SPEAK-AS-ONE tried to connect to individuals disconnected from the first tribe by THEE-I-DARE.[24]

During the incident, Siobhan and Nayeli were arguing outside; the situation with their baby and Colm caused a permanent rift in their relationship. None of SPEAK-AS-ONE’s hosts witnessed the event directly, but they heard shouts and found Colm outside. Colm seemed confused, like he had been controlled by other Voices. One Watcher suspected that the crime scene had been staged,[25] but Siobhan and Nayeli didn’t remember what occurred.[26] Only Colm’s fingerprints were found on the sculpture, though SPEAK-AS-ONE believed he was altered by another Voice.[11]

A car, believed to have been the Unknown Caller, was spotted lingering outside 922 Hoadley the morning after the vandalism.[27]

The exact events of the vandalism incident were unknown when CHASE-THE-SUN began asking players for help.[28] The following was learned through interactions during the game:

Colm had sought to take the child away from Redacre,[21] but CHASE-THE-SUN wouldn't help him. As a result, he turned to another Voice, a fragment of THEE-I-DARE. THEE-I-DARE stated that although he remembered Colm, he couldn't remember why he was called to Colm, questioning "how is he hosting me?".[7] Because THEE-I-DARE was already shattered when he met Colm, he was only able to speak in dreams.[29]

Shortly after THEE-I-DARE found himself hosted by Colm, he realized he wasn't alone in that body. HUNT-THE-STRONG, then an agent of CHASE-THE-SUN, was also present, and the two began to converse.[30] HUNT-THE-STRONG had plenty of time to influence Colm through dreams.[31] He distinguished himself from CHASE-THE-SUN, saying, "No one cares what's ’fair’ anymore. They want power, no matter the price. That's me."[7] He dared THEE-I-DARE to shatter CHASE-THE-SUN's symbol in 922 Hoadly; through Colm Ryan's belief, this would break CHASE-THE-SUN.[11] THEE-I-DARE, though resistant to hurting a sibling, believed that breaking CHASE-THE-SUN would prevent the child from falling into the hands of CHORUS, so he followed through. In a twisted way, THEE-I-DARE believed he was freeing the child.[20] THEE-I-DARE was bound by dares at the time, so he couldn’t refuse.[2] HUNT-THE-STRONG extended the dare, forcing THEE-I-DARE to forget what had occurred.[20] With CHASE-THE-SUN’s only host taken from her, HUNT-THE-STRONG was born through consuming CHASE-THE-SUN,[32] making Colm a host to both HUNT-THE-STRONG and THEE-I-DARE.[8]

Colm left a name fragment in his room, to which THEE-I-DARE believes he was able to because he "believed he was dying".[33] After the broken symbol incident, the Voice came to 922 Hoadly in person and took him away, which was a rare occurrence.[25] SPEAK-AS-ONE confirmed that Colm was in their care,[26] but the Watchers did not know why the Voice was interested in Colm, which caused one Watcher to feel afraid.[25] The child was presumed missing and was not with Siobhan or Nayeli.[20]

SPEAK-AS-ONE imprisoned Colm in Saturation Control to contain HUNT-THE-STRONG, as Colm was his first host in Redacre.[34] SPEAK-AS-ONE claimed they once had HUNT-THE-STRONG contained, but that he was let free.[35] However, DIE-FOR-YOU believed that HUNT-THE-STRONG was never as contained as SPEAK-AS-ONE claimed.[36] Colm was “patient zero” for HUNT-THE-STRONG, but at least one of the people he encountered in the days before being captured was receptive enough to HUNT-THE-STRONG’s message to become a host without being forcefully converted.[37]

In-Game[ | ]

The Witness[ | ]

Before the exact events of the sculpture-breaking were known, There were rumors among the Voices of a Witness who saw the 922 incident.[27] The Witness could not have been the Unknown Caller because his car was only present the next morning,[38] nor Siobhan because she is a host to SPEAK-AS-ONE, who would lie to any of THEE-I-DARE’s Chosen.[39] THEE-I-DARE sought the Witness to learn what occurred that night.[40]

HQ also sought information on the sculpture and asked around for theories.[41][42][43] Many club members had different theories about what happened, leaving HQ confused: “Have we solved this mystery? Our level of confidence! Is! OFFICIALLY… Medium!”[1]

At some point, the rumor changed. Someone revealed more about the Witness, but THEE-I-DARE wasn’t sure who spoke or what they said.[44] The Pact believed they were missing some key witness or evidence that would help them understand what occurred.[45] The Pact eventually learned that Witness and the Sculptor were the same, and Colm was taken by SPEAK-AS-ONE. He was suspected to still be alive,[2] though no one had seen him since.[36]

For a time, THEE-I-DARE had a gap in his memory; he couldn’t remember what happened to the sculpture and believed he was made to forget.[19] The story of Colm falling into a puddle felt faintly familiar to THEE-I-DARE, though he couldn’t figure out why.[46] Listening to certain theories of what occurred made THEE-I-DARE feel ill.[47] because he was experiencing dissonance, which occurs when a Voice has forgotten something that a nearby host remembers.[11] As he started to remember, THEE-I-DARE confided in one of his Chosen that Colm was his host when he broke the sculpture, and only his.[48] THEE-I-DARE at first didn’t know why he broke the symbol. He has always opposed tyrants, but CHASE-THE-SUN didn’t seem to be one.[49]

The full story of the sculpture incident was discovered with the help of the Unknown Caller.[50] The Unknown Caller managed to gain access to Colm’s archive,[51] including recordings of him singing in two tones in his sleep.[52] The recordings were made by Colm, and the Unknown Caller gained possession of the only copy of them following Colm’s disappearance.[12]

When listening to the recordings, the Unknown Caller could only hear weird sounds, like codes, but kids were able to make sense of it. The Unknown Caller began contacting players, asking them to go to the room with the broken symbol in 922 Hoadly; for a time, the Voices avoided the room, making it a secure place to talk. The Caller would then play a portion of the recording, which could be heard in game.[13]

Within the recordings, club members heard a conversation between two Voices.[53] The Caller wasn’t sure why kids could make sense of the noise, and in some cases asked multiple kids to listen to a sample to confirm they heard the same thing.[17] To hear a Voice within the singing, kids had to have exposure to that specific Voice,[19] so the Unknown Caller began to seek out kids who had spoken to HUNT-THE-STRONG.[52]

After sharing a few parts, the Unknown Caller disappeared; the rest of the recording was shared through deadman’s switches set up to send if he missed a check-in.[54] For the deadman's switches, the Unknown Caller picked kids who seemed trustworthy and likely to share what they learned.[55]

When each piece had been shared with players, the full recording was released in a broadcast:

THEE-I-DARE: This... body is not mine. How is he hosting me?

UNKNOWN HUNTER VOICE: True. The sleeping sculptor is Hers. CHASE-THE-SUN. The Win, made flesh. But out there in the real world? She's losing. Ryan's the only one that believes in her. No one cares what's "fair" anymore. They want power, no matter the price. That's me.

THEE-I-DARE: You're part of her, but you don't have to be. Room in these woods for two hunters.

UNKNOWN HUNTER VOICE: Please. I don't share the kill. Ryan went to bed angry. Someone told him they're going to raise his baby, their way, and his goddess is no help at all. He's ready to let you out to play. You smash his sculpture, make him believe he's breaking her. You leave her with nothing. He wakes up... all he remembers is me. And I'll owe you a favor when you start to lose your empty little war.

THEE-I-DARE: You want to pin this on me, because our family hates my guts already. They hunt me, while you go play fox in the henhouse. Pass.

UNKNOWN HUNTER VOICE: Must I dare you? How droll. (disappointed) So be it.

THEE-I-DARE: I will hunt you down for this. Wear your ass like a pelt.

UNKNOWN HUNTER VOICE: (chuckle) I do hope so. May the worst man win.[7]

As HUNT-THE-STRONG could still be in Colm, along with a piece of THEE-I-DARE,[56] THEE-I-DARE wondered if Colm would seek revenge on him or HUNT-THE-STRONG if found.[57] The Watchers were aware that Colm hosted both HUNT-THE-STRONG and THEE-I-DARE, but some wondered why the Voice did not share any details with them.[58] One Watcher wondered about the Voice’s motives, but feared being purged for questioning them.[59] The Watcher was also uneasy because they felt that SPEAK-AS-ONE was not fully in harmony. They had been ordered to avoid 922 Hoadley, but suspect the baby is missing because they never heard cries from the house, despite speaking with children who are around it often.[60]

HQ is investigating the missing baby, and believes they’re still alive because HUNT-THE-STRONG “doesn’t like to waste potential”.[61] Both Colm and Nayeli had “great aptitudes”, so it was likely the baby inherited some talents.[62] The Voice hoped that the baby inherited Colm’s ability to host two Voices. However, the Voice “hated the idea of sharing”, so it’s unknown which other Voice they planned to work with.[63] It was later learned that HUNT-THE-STRONG, through Lenka Staneck, took the child. THEE-I-DARE hoped Colm would find the baby if freed.[64] Nayeli and Siobhan’s child was taken to a facility controlled by HUNT-THE-STRONG in Maryland.[citation needed]

The broken sculpture can still be found in an upper room of 922 Hoadly.

The Captive[ | ]

Around The Blackout Club (game)’s 1.0 Launch, a character referred to as “The Captive” visited players, pulling them to Saturation Control. Because he primarily visited new players, there are no recordings of interactions with the Captive. His last visit was in August 2019.

After learning of the Captive, SPEAK-AS-ONE recalled a former THEE-I-DARE host, a living man, who was imprisoned in Saturation Control. They were concerned that the Captive was able to reach out to kids, referring to it as a “breach”, and concluding that the man must be “empowered” due to his unprecedented ability to bring kids to Saturation Control. Because this ability was considered highly unusual and dangerous, Watchers urged followers to warn The Voice about the Captive.[65] The Captive was known to the Watchers as “The Forbidden One” because they feared he may pollute the Song if his story was added to it, explaining that “the truth is infectious”.[4]

THEE-I-DARE was unsure of the Captive’s identity,[53] but the Captive used THEE-I-DARE’s old symbol to communicate with kids in Saturation Control, leading Many of THEE-I-DARE’s chosen to theorize that the Captive was Colm. THEE-I-DARE believed the theory had merit because HUNT-THE-STRONG would not have been strong enough to erase THEE-I-DARE’s influence over Colm; the connection must have been broken by SPEAK-AS-ONE.[45]

The Captive was imprisoned in Saturation Control and called out to players from his cell. THEE-I-DARE believes that he spoke through the Captive but does not remember.[66] The Captive once hosted a dying part of THEE-I-DARE.[66] The Captive's body and mind may be "on separate journeys." THEE-I-DARE believes that SPEAK-AS-ONE knows where The Captive's body resides, but The Captive's mind continues to resist.[67] THEE-I-DARE says that part of the Captive is lost, and right now he is just a collection of imperfect memories gathered by The Club.[66]

When Isabela Madi-Shaw reached out to players in June 2020, she mentioned a man imprisoned with her; he wanted to escape Saturation Control and had taught her how to reach out to the club.[68] Bells described the man as having a kind voice, and she believed he’d been in Saturation Control for a long time. The Captive warned Bells not to trust anyone, even him.[69] Dax referred to the Captive as Bell’s “prison sensei”.[70]

Though the Captive was trapped in Saturation Control, his mind resisted SPEAK-AS-ONE.[67] The Captive was not able to wander Saturation Control, but he could call to kids from his cell.[66] In addition to Bells, the Captive taught Grandmother how to reach out from Saturation Control in exchange for information on the Voice’s investigation of him.[71] He sought to understand how Saturation Control worked by learning Old Tongue, and he gave information to Grandmother in exchange for new Old Tongue phrases.[8] The Captive also wanted to discover a means of inoculation against the Voices, searching for a way to prevent hosting.[72] The Captive required new Old Tongue to be performed by at least two kids at once. To trade, Colm hosts Wayka, allowing her to guide his movements.[73]

The Captive described Saturation Control to Grandmother as a code, a “trick of the mind”, and believed Old Tongue was the key to escaping. Grandmother described him as embodied (unlike her, who has no physical form), a two-voiced singer who is a self-proclaimed artist. At first, she didn’t know whether the Captive was Colm.[3] Grandmother learned that the Captive once hosted HUNT-THE-STRONG and THEE-I-DARE,[8] and was eventually able to confirm that the Captive she traded with was Colm Ryan. Prisoners within Saturation Control are not supposed to be able to communicate, but Colm’s ability to sing in two tones made him difficult to contain.[74]

HUNT-THE-STRONG claimed that Colm would one day host him again.[14] THEE-I-DARE did wish to free Colm and find the baby at some point, but he wasn’t sure what to prioritize: “MY HOPE IS. CALLER. THEN STANECK? THEN WHAT SHE KNOWS. THEN… COLM… GRANDMOTHER… SOMETHING… BABY.”[64] However, the Unknown Caller wasn’t sure if Colm should be freed: “Ryan’s beliefs are mercurial. I’m not sure I’d WANT to let him out now.”[37]

Colm left the THEE-I-DARE symbols in Saturation Control. Some symbols were only visible upon backtracking along the path, described by THEE-I-DARE as “an act of faith in doubt itself.”[75] Colm was kept in Saturation Group 6, where the few captured hosts of THEE-I-DARE were held.[76] Isabela Madi-Shaw was moved from Saturation Control to cut off her communication with Colm. Group 6 is mostly empty because most of THEE-I-DARE’s hosts were killed rather than captured.[77] Colm was kept alive because SPEAK-AS-ONE wanted to study him.[78] The Voice studied Colm “day and night” to learn the old tongue hidden in his mind. They wanted to complete the Old Tongue name of one of the Voices, but at some point stopped visiting the prisoners in Saturation Control, implying they were successful.[79]

In September 2021, THEE-I-DARE sought to learn what he said to Bells before she was taken. When she physically visited Saturation Control, before being mentally imprisoned there, Bells used a name fragment, along with the presence of Cody and Colm in Group 6 to hear THEE-I-DARE speak. However, Cody and Colm both used a code in Old Tongue to protect their minds. With the code, it would be possible to access their memories of THEE-I-DARE meeting Bells.[80] Colm and Cody shared information, and Bells met at least one of them. Once the passphrase was discovered, THEE-I-DARE planned to guide club members into Saturation Control and ask them to perform the code in Group 6.[81]

THEE-I-DARE learned how to bring children to Saturation Control and hide them from SPEAK-AS-ONE by making them free of sin. He advised club members to follow the symbols left by Colm to find the location of Group 6. However, SPEAK-AS-ONE added more guards to the path after Isabela found the cell.[82]

In addition to the sleep-talking recordings the Unknown Caller also had videos of Colm acting out Old Tongue gestures, and he offered to help match the gestures with ones known by the club.[83]

After the club showed him various Old Tongue gestures,[84][85][86] the Unknown Caller was able to match most of the video. In the recording, Colm performed three gestures, paused for the length of three more gestures as if receiving a response, and then performed four more gestures. The matched phrase was: You/To/Thy, Fault/Host/Flesh, Sky/World/His, Spite/Sin/Stand; three missing gestures; Through/Burn/War, You/To/Thy, Sky/World/His.[87]

THEE-I-DARE warned that each club member must prepare the entire code, in case they end up as the last one standing. Because Old Tongue is open to many interpretations, players also had to guess which word was meant by each gesture, and say each word aloud while performing the code.[88] Of the three parts of the code, THEE-I-DARE was able to confirm when a grouping was correct. Players tested different words and combinations over multiple interactions.[89][90][91] The full code was discovered to be “to host his spite, stand against all, burn thy world.” Colm and Cody likely picked “stand against all” because as prisoners, they were often forced to kneel. After performing the code, players heard audio of THEE-I-DARE speaking.[92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100]

FIND-THY-VOICE, the new Voice born from the shattered THEE-I-DARE during Sundown, described Colm as “stuck in a prison of [her] mistakes”.[101] Before leaving Redacre, FIND-THY-VOICE freed Colm from Saturation Control.[5]
